This is a running list of words and phrases used throughout the site that may not be familiar to everyone.
(*) People who care about intentionally creating space for & empowering others, make the effort to keep learning, and continuously improve how they show up. As Jennifer Brown puts it, "being an ally is not a label you give yourself, but rather one that you earn through your words and your actions. You take responsibility for your impact, and you own it when you miss the mark" (Brown, J. 2022).
(*) People who want to work and live in safe, harassment-free spaces and who may be frequent receivers of unwelcome behaviors, struggle with asserting or protecting their boundaries, and/or struggle to find their voice when interacting with others.
Practices and behaviors that help people find their own voices and amplify others’ as they continue building cultures of inclusion and respect.

(*) Also known as active bystanders. Allies become upstanders when they act to empower someone or mindfully intervene to help everyone live their values during an interaction.
*Note that allies, upstanders, and empowerees are mutually inclusive concepts - you can be one or more at the same time.
